Rebecca Noel asked:

ESSENTIAL OIL of Orange (Citrus sinensis) is a fun cheery oil that is one of my all-time favorites and one that is perfect for someone just being introduced to essential oils. Essential orange oil has many uses both physiologically and emotionally.

Orange essential oil helps prevent the growth of bacteria and stops free radicals (orange essential oil has a 7500 score on the ORAC scale - Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity…making it a very good anti-oxidant)

Orange essential oil also enhances the absorption of vitamin C in the body. It is high in vitamin C and carotene (vitamin A). Orange essential oil is also very high in limonene, a super-nutrient that has been studied extensively for its ability to prevent cellular mutations and combat cancer tumor growth in over 50 clinical studies.

It benefits the heart by lowering the heart rhythm and helping to regulate the heartbeat. It is beneficial for hypertension and arteriosclerosis, is anticoagulant, stimulates the bladder and kidneys, is a diuretic and is great for relieving fluid retention, it also softens the epidermis, reduces the appearance of cellulite, stimulates blood circulation and lymph fluids and is very helpful in treating swollen tissue.

Orange essential oil is very beneficial and soothing to dry, irritated, or acne-prone skin conditions. Its regenerative properties make it good for aging as well as rough or calloused skin. Avoid applying to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 24 hours.

It is a very warming oil both physically and emotionally.

Orange essential oil is uplifting and anti-depressant. A 1995 Mie University study found citrus fragrances boosted immunity, induced relaxation and reduced depression

For geographical locations that lack sunshine on a regular basis or rooms without much light, diffusing orange essential oil is great for helping with depression and seasonal affective disorder.

Orange helps to stimulate joy, optimism and playfulness…it harmonizes feelings and awakens creativity. It’s wonderful to use for children and for adults too who want to laugh and play or for times when you may feel tense, nervous and withdrawn and need help to relax and open up.

Physiologically orange essential oil creates warmth and pleasure in the body and stimulates sensuality and pleasure…especially when combined with ylang ylang essential oil. Orange helps connect us to our five physical senses and also helps to remove inhibitions. Diffusing orange essential oil in the bedroom might be highly beneficial in certain ways.

Some more great uses for Orange essential oil:

Orange oil is great for wood care and furniture. It is gentle yet it powerfully protects wood from insect damage and easily cleans fingerprints and grime off of the furniture without damaging it.

Use orange essential oil for cleaning oil and grease from your cooktop and surrounding areas in the kitchen.

Add a few drops of orange essential oil to hand soap to clean dirt, grease and even paint off of dirty hands.

Mix a couple drops of orange essential oil with some baking soda to make a paste and brush your teeth for natural teeth whitening instead of chemical bleaches that are absorbed sublingually into the bloodstream.

Massage orange essential oil over cellulite problem areas for smoother looking and feeling skin.

Massage over callouses on the bottoms of feet for smooth and pretty feet.

Orange oil is also a perfect oil to add to your culinary favorites. It stimulates the appetite and digestion. I love adding a heaping tablespoon of raw cacao powder and about 8-10 drops of orange essential oil to my morning protein shake for a wonderful chocolate orange flavor that is super high in anti-oxidants too.

Believe it or not it is excellent on salads. Once I accidentally picked up a bottle of orange essential oil instead of the lemon essential oil and put it all over my salad…when I realized I had used the wrong oil and thought I had ruined my salad I almost threw it out and started over but when I tasted it, it was amazing…even better than lemon…now I use it all the time on salads.

I also add a few drops of orange essential oil to a honey and balsamic vinegar reduction…after it cools down of course so I don’t destroy the essential oil…and use this as a wonderful glaze over duck ******.

It’s great in deserts too like cheesecake, cookies, and mulled wine and anything chocolate. Add a drop to orange spice tea with a little coconut milk for a wonderful alternative to coffee with cream.

This is a great beginner oil that everyone loves and should always have on hand.

Oil Pulling asked:

So, what EXACTLY is oil pulling? Oil pulling (often referred to as oil swirling or oil swishing), invented by Ukrainian Physician Dr. F. Karach, M.D., is basically the process of swishing around oil in your mouth (think mouthwash, except using oil instead) for a period of usually about 15-25 minutes. It is referred to as “Kavala Graham” in Ayurveda texts.

So why would anyone be crazy enough or even remotely have any interest in doing this? Dr. Karach has said that his method heals the person as a whole. When Dr. Karach studied his oil under a microscope after pulling, he discovered many live micro-organisms swimming in it.  He himself has cured his chronic blood disease of which he suffered with for over 15 years! The main premise of oil pulling is that by swishing oil inside of your mouth, toxins get “pulled” from your bloodstream and into the mucous membrane. One study entitled performed by Sharath, et.al, set out to determine the efficacy of oil pulling on oral health status using Sesame Oil. They recorded a DRASTIC decrease in plaque and micro-organisms in the plaque samples, concluding that oil pulling is an effective home therapy in maintaining and IMPROVING oral health.  Another study recruited 10 males (all subjects had mild to moderate gingivitis), and ran a 45 day oil pulling study. Using sunflower oil, each subject held the oil in their mouths for 8-10 minutes. This study also concluded that oil pulling has the ability to reduce plaque and gingivitis using Sunflower oil (Amith et al., 2007).

As you can see by now, there IS scientific evidence out there and more studies will undoubtedly be conducted in the future. It is clear that there is an established oral health benefit to oil pulling, but what good is oil pulling to your other health problems? What type of changes can you experience besides the changes inside of your mouth? As you will see, the benefits of oil pulling are unparalleled.

Jaden Santon asked:

It is a normal misconception that coconut oil is bad for you. People all over the world are experiencing the vigorous repayment of using coconut oil. It is actually one of the healthiest oils you can consume. Here are the top seven reasons you should use coconut oil as an alternative to other general cooking oils.

Unlike many other frequent oils, like soy (vegetable) and corn, coconut oil won’t make you fat. Coconut oil contains channel-connect triglycerides (MCT), which are a painless fuel for the body to burn, without rotary to fat. Most other cooking oils and fats include long-series triglycerides (LCT). LCT’s are regularly stored as fat. Since coconut oil is a MCT, it is more certainly absorbed and converted to energy faster.

People in the tropics have relied on coconuts as a traditional chief in their diet for centuries. They consume large amounts of coconut oil every day. Instead of getting fatter, it helps them break wholesome, wiry and dapper. When they button from coconut oil to our recent oils, they expand plumpness and the strength evils that our present people faces.

Some other people who have known this exactness for a long time are people who are in the animal supply dealing. When stock was fed vegetable oils, they put on mass and engender more oily meat. When they are fed coconuts oil, they become very support.

Not only does coconut oil change to energy quicker in your body, it increases your metabolism, which promotes stress harm. Because it boosts your metabolism, it helps your body burn fat more effectively.

Coconut oiled may triple your calorie burn. Since coconut oil is a MCT, it is converted to energy so abruptly that it creates a lot of fervor. In a study available in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, MCT’s burn three time more calories for six hours after a meal than LCT’s.

The February 15, 2005 supply of Woman’s World magazine stated that coconut oil is the “underground high-metabolism surprise.”

This is great reports for people who have thyroid troubles, since coconut oil improves lethargic thyroids by stimulating the production of luxury thyroid hormones. Most other frequent oils, like vegetable (soy) and corn have been revealed to inhibit thyroid behave. Most cooking oils enclose omega 6 greasy acids, something we get way too much of in the United States. Our omega 6 to omega 3 ratio should be 1:1 but it is more like 50:1. We require drastically to cut back our omega 6 oils and consume much more omega 3 oils to be healthful. And coconut oil is filled with these strong omega 3 fatty acids.

Because of the vigorous omega 3 fatty acids and the fact that it increases the metabolism, most people that flog to coconut oil feel a burst of added energy in their daily life.

This is because coconut oil is sort’s richest reason of form-string triglycerides (MCT’s), which spread metabolic duty and front to burden defeat. MCT’s promote thermogenesis, which increases the body’s metabolism, producing energy.

This is because coconut oil is life’s richest font of standard-chain triglycerides (MCT’s), which heighten metabolic rates and central to load deficit. MCT’s promote thermogenesis, which increases the body’s metabolism, producing energy. Many people with chronic weakness syndrome and fibromyalgia have found that adding coconut and coconut oil to their diet was valuable to them.

One of the best clothes you can use on your skin and locks is coconut oil. Coconut oil one of the best equipment you can pertain frankly on your skin and locks. It gives brief relief to skin evils like rashes. It aids in curing and restoring skin to a younger appearance. It has also been known to help with people who endure from toadstool infections in the skin, as well as many other skin problems.

Not only does temper and silky your skin, coconut oil has antioxidant properties that guard the skin from released radical injury. Coconut oiled makes superb rubdown oil too.

Coconut oiled has strong repayment that most other oils do not. Evidence is mounting that coconut oil has defiant-fungal, opposing-bacterial and anti-viral property when both consumed and worn topically on the skin.

Most oils oxidize and service sour very hurriedly causing open radical hurt in our bodies. Coconut oil is not clearly rusty and does not root damaging limitless radical hurt like polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Free radical hurt is thought to be responsible for many ailments in our body from arthritis to bigger susceptibility to cancers.

Coconut oiled also helps our bodies absorb other nutrients more effectively, such as Vitamin E.

Coconut oiled is one of the best oils you can use for cooking. It has an elevated smoke time than lime oil, which means it can take upper temperatures better. There are the healthy omega 3 oil we can pick to consume, such as flax and emerald oil, but they don’t do well under the high intensity we use for cooking. Coconut oil can be used in senior cooking temperatures.

It is harder for coconut oil to go rancid, unlike other cooking oils, which are commonly rancid long before you even transport them home. Rancid oils reason free radical break in the body, which is a primary cause of evil. Coconut oil is settled for over a year at extent temperature.

Because of the misinformation we have been given for being, we have puzzled out on the healthy payback that coconut oil has given the people of the tropics for centuries. Nevertheless now it has been rediscovered! Coconut oiled is so useful, it won’t be long before we see coconut oil supplements promoted, but you can get the flinch on the current crowd and begin consuming and cooking with coconut oil nowadays!

Bob Jent asked:

Put simply, oil seeps are naturally occurring oil and natural gas “springs” which rise from oil reservoirs within the earth and emerge at the surface. Seeps usually contain some mixture of natural gas, crude oil, water and asphaltum, which is a thick substance commonly known as tar. Similar to the manner in which freshwater springs on the earth’s surface originate from collected water underground, oil seeps originate from underground collections of oil that have accumulated within porous rock and have been contained by impermeable rock.

Oil seeps occur both on shore and under water, and provide valuable insight about the location of oil reservoirs deep within the earth. Since we have yet to develop a one hundred percent accurate way of determining the location of underground oil reservoirs, the presence of oil seeps provides valuable clues that can reduce the risk of wasted capital for oil drilling endeavors by companies such as Western Pipeline Corporation. The first project believed to have been dedicated to drilling for oil, led by Edwin Drake, took place in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in an area that was chosen in part because of the known oil seeps.

Oil seeps provide a natural resource which has been used by humans for various purposes throughout history, long before the advent of commercial drilling as we know it today. Native Americans are believed to have used resources collected from oil seeps for such purposes as lantern fuel, lubricant for wagon wheels and adhesive for weapons and canoes centuries ago. Asphaltum from seeps is also believed to have been used by such civilizations as face paint and for decorative additions to bowls and jewelry.

Oil seeps on land, though they may only release small amounts of oil and be difficult to see, provide scientists with important clues about the underground environment and the potential of an oil reservoir being located beneath. Likewise, oil seeps in the ocean are evidence of possible oil reservoirs below the sea floor, which modern oil drilling technology is now capable of extracting. Oil and natural gas released through vents in the ocean floor float and collect on the surface of the water, often forming oil covered natural gas bubbles and eventually a film of oil on the surface, making them easy to locate. Over time, large amounts of oil collect on the surface that eventually become visible from satellite images. Combined with information from other technologies, satellite analysis of oil seeps can provide scientists important data about the type of oil that is present as well as the potential for successful excavation.

The presence of oil seeps leading to further exploration has resulted in the discoveries of numerous productive oil reservoirs in the past. Without the natural clues about subsurface activity provided by oil seeps, we may have never discovered oil and its many commercial uses that are so common today.

Jean Fisher asked:

Why should you use olive oil?  Well there are several reasons.  Substituting olive oil, a monounsaturated fat, for saturated fats or polyunsaturated fats can:

•    Reduce blood pressure

•    Inhibit the growth of some cancers

•    Benefit people at risk for or with diabetes

•    Lessen the severity of asthma and arthritis

•    Actually help your body maintain a lower weight

HEALTHY HEART BENEFITS

Atherosclerosis, also called hardening of the arteries, occurs when particles of LDL cholesterol stick to the walls of the arteries.  Eventually these particles build up and form plaque.  This plaque narrows the blood vessels and increases the work load of the heart in an effort to get oxygenated blood to the entire body.  The result can be a heart attack or stroke.

Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fat and antioxidants like chlorophyll, carotenoids and vitamin E.  Scientists have identified a compound in olive oil called oleuropein which prevents the LDL cholesterol from oxidizing.  It is the oxidized cholesterol that sticks to the walls of the arteries and forms plaque.  Replacing other fats in your diet with olive oil can significantly lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack.

CANCER INHIBITOR

A study published in the January 2005 issue of Annals of Oncology has identified oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid found in olive oil, as having the ability to reduce the affect of an oncogene (a gene that will turn a host cell into a cancer cell).  This particular oncogene is associated with the rapid growth of ****** cancer tumors.  The conclusion of the researchers was that oleic acid when combined with drug therapy encouraged the self-destruction of aggressive, treatment-resistant cancer cells thus destroying the cancer.  Olive oil has been positively indicated in studies on prostate and endometrial cancers as well.

Unlike other fats, which are associated with a higher risk of colon cancer, olive oil helps protect the cells of the colon from carcinogens.  A study published in the November 2003 issue of Food Chemistry Toxicology suggests that the antioxidants in olive oil reduce the amount of carcinogens formed when meat is cooked.

BLOOD SUGAR CONTROLLER

Diabetics or those at risk for diabetes are advised to combine a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet with olive oil.  Studies show this combination is superior at controlling blood sugar levels compared to a diet that consists entirely of low-fat meals.  Adding olive oil is also linked to lower triglyceride levels.  Many diabetics live with high triglyceride levels which put them at risk for heart disease.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES

The body uses the healthy fats in olive oil to produce natural anti-inflammatory agents.  These anti-inflammatory agents can help reduce the severity of both arthritis and asthma.  Uninflammed cell membranes are more fluid and better able to move healthy nutrients into the cells and move waste products out.  A lower incidence of osteoporosis and dementia is found in areas where people consume large quantities of olive oil.

A FAT THAT HELPS YOU LOSE FAT

Sounds impossible, right?  A study conducted on eight over-weight men published in the September 2003 issue of the British Journal of Nutrition yielded results that indicate a significant loss of body weight and fat mass can be achieved without increasing physical activity and making only one change in eating habits:  the substitution of olive oil for saturated fats.  The eight men were divided into two groups and for four weeks ate similar foods with the exception that the first group ate more saturated than unsaturated fats.  The second group consumed the same number of calories as the first group, but the fats were mostly monounsaturated fat (olive oil).  At the end of four weeks, the men from the second group were lighter and had a lower body-fat index than the men who ate the saturated fats.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON BUYING AND STORING OLIVE OIL

Exposure to light and heat can turn olive oil rancid.  This destroys the healthy, antioxidant properties of the oil.  Look for olive oil that is sold in darkly tinted bottles.  Also, look carefully at the display in the grocery store.  Are there glaring lights or sunny windows nearby?  If so, you will want to check out some different stores.  My favorite grocery store keeps the olive oil on the shelves closest to the floor and away from the fluorescent lights.

When you get home, find a dark, cool cupboard for storage.  One suggestion is to pour some of the oil from the original container into a smaller container.  The original container can be kept in the refrigerator for maximum protection.  (The oil will become cloudy and more solid in the refrigerator.)  The smaller container you select for your weekly supply of olive oil should be opaque and have a tight-sealing lid.  Exposure to air is another enemy of the fragile antioxidants.

Confused about the different grades of olive oil?  Extra-virgin olive oil is produced from the first pressing of the olives.  It has the lightest flavor and contains the richest array of antioxidants.  The next pressing of the olives produces fine virgin oil.  Refined means that chemicals were used to extract the oil instead of pressing.  Avoid refined olive oils.  Pure olive oil is a blend of refined and virgin olive oils.  I don’t recommend pure grade either.  If you see the words cold pressed on a bottle of olive oil that means heat was not used when extracting the oil.  Remember, heat destroys antioxidants, so cold pressed is a good thing.

One last thought on this subject.  If you are considering switching to olive oil from other oils, you might be shocked when you first look at the differences in price.  I’m a serious bargain hunter.  I always buy generic and look for bulk discounts whenever possible.  But even the most determined penny pincher understands that there are simply some things that are worth the extra money.  Olive oil is one of them.
