Peter Clark asked:

You may be worried about using an oily anti-aging ****** moisturizer, particularly if you have oily skin. It seems to make sense that using a skin care product without oil should be good for your skin. What are the pros and cons of using an oil free anti-aging ****** moisturizer?

Many moisturizers containing oil don’t work well and aren’t good for your skin. That’s because there are many types of oil that aren’t particularly good for your skin, and so using them has negative effects.

Oil in an anti-aging and skincare product can lead to clogged skin pores, acne flareups and other skin disorders or skin problems. And the oil isn’t essential to moisturize in many cases because most oils used in skin care and anti-aging products don’t work successfully.

One of the most common oils used in moisturizers and other skin care and ****** products is mineral oil. Why mineral oil? It’s cheap. However mineral oil isn’t at all good for the skin. It clogs pores and leaves your skin feeling oily and heavy. And mineral oil isn’t particularly successful to add moisture.

However your skin has it’s own oils which can be leached out, and an oil based skin care product can be useful. It isn’t necessary to use oil free anti-aging moisturizers.

But there’s one crucial point to remember. If you use a anti aging product with oil it has to be the right kind of oil, not mineral oil.

What are the right kind of oil? The company that produces the worlds best skincare products uses 2 specific oils that are proven to be good for moisturizing, and not lead to the kinds of problems that mineral oil in moisturizers can result in.

These are grapeseed oil, and Babassu oil. Babassu oil is a light oil which is known to sooth the skin and add moisture successfully. It helps protect your skin from dirt and is good for both oily and dry skins. Babassu oil comes from the fruit of a free found in the Amazon called the Babassu palm.

Grapeseed oil has strong anti oxidants and is very good for helping repair ****** skin, particularly around the eyes. It is rich in linoleic acid and other oils all essential for improving skin health.

So should you be using an oil free anti-aging ****** moisturizer? If you’re using a ****** product that is based on mineral oil then yes, get rid of it. But if you’re using the worlds best skincare and anti-aging products which utilize Babassu oil and grapeseed oil then don’t worry, whether you have an oily or dry complexion those products will moisturize and protect your skin successfully.

It’s not essential to use oil free anti-aging ****** moisturizers as long as you use a skincare product with the right oils.

Carrier oils can be used for much more than just diluting your essential oils! The natural skin softening, moisturising and nourishing qualities of Quinessence Carrier oils can be used to soften wrinkles, increase elasticity and help balance an uneven complexion.

Vegetable and carrier oils have a plethora of fine uses which include acting as a carrier for therapeutic applications, as an excellent addition to your culinary creations, as a lathering agent for soap, and a binding medium for cosmetics. It is hard to imagine where we would be with our creations, if it were not for the goodness and substance that pure oil provides.

At Mountain Rose Herbs we are committed to providing you the most magnificent vegetable oils that are unsurpassed in color, depth, consistency, essential fatty acids and key nutrients.

Significant role to play

Carrier oils play a far more significant role in aromatherapy than many people realise, and in comparison to the essential oils some people feel they are of little importance. To believe this would be a mistake though, because they offer a wealth of health-giving benefits of their own. They contain vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids, and many of them soften and improve the condition of the skin. Technically classed as ‘fixed’ oils because they do not evaporate, carrier oils are also known as base oils and vegetable oils.

Essential vs. Carrier Oils

Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, bark, roots and other aromatic portions of a botanical. Essential oils evaporate and have a concentrated aroma. Carrier oils, on the other hand, are pressed from the fatty portions (seeds, nuts, kernels) and do not evaporate or impart their aroma as strongly as essential oils. Carrier oils can go rancid over time, but essential oils do not. Instead, essential oils “oxidize” and lose their therapeutic benefits, but they don’t go rancid.

Almond, sweet - Prunus amygdalus, P. dulcis (Family, Rosaceae) - USA - Obtained from the Nut of the tree and native to Asia and the Mediterranean this oil is the favorite Carrier oil for Essential oil aromatherapy blends. It can be used by itself for moisturizing skin. Good for all skin types. It is a favorite with aromatherapists, blending well with any other oil and penetrating the skin very well. Excellent for skin. Contains both oleic and linoleic acid an small amounts, vitamins A&B, and copper and iron. For damaged skin mix with equal amount of calendula and for mature skin mix with 10% wheatgerm, borage an macadamia nut oils.

Grapeseed: Botanical Name: Vitus vinifera Aroma: Light, slightly sweet with a hint of a nutty aroma.Texture: ThinColor: Virtually clear and has an almost unnoticeable tinge of yellow/green.Notes: Unlike most other carrier oils, grapeseed oil is solvent extracted and may have trace amounts of chemicals remaining. It has a lower shelf-life and goes rancid rather fast.  Grapeseed oil should be stored in an amber bottle and in a cool dark area to reduce the chance of rancidity.

Coconut oil is, according to folkloric tales, good for many ailments,  from wounds, burns, lice, ect. It also has anti-microbal activity. Coconut oil is an edible oil that has been consumed in tropical places for thousands of years. Studies done on native diets high in coconut consumption show that these populations are generally in good health, and don’t suffer as much from many of the modern diseases of western nations.

Avoid contact of essential oils with the skin as they can cause irritation. Using latex gloves and wearing protective glasses is recommended when handling essential oils. Essential oils must never be used internally. For application to the skin, dilute the essential oil with a good quality carrier oil e.g. jojoba, almond or olive oil. 3% essential oil with 97% carrier oil is a safe ratio.

Store Away from Heat, Moisture, and Light: Essential oils should only be sold and stored in dark glass containers, and should be kept away from heat, moisture, and light, as exposure will degrade the oils. Keep the bottles tightly closed when not in use, and avoid touching the inside of the lid or the reducer top when using the oils. Store the bottles in a cool, dry, dark place, out of children’s reach.

Essential oils can often be purchased as blends of several essential oils. The advantage if it is a blend of pure essential oils is that you can save from having to buy every essential oil individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend by not mixing it yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.

Although essential oils do not become rancid, they can oxidize, deteriorate and lose their beneficial therapeutic properties over time. Oils such as the citrus oils will oxidize and begin to lose their aroma and therapeutic properties in as little as six months. Not all essential oils diminish in quality as time passes. Essential oils such as patchouli and sandalwood mature with age. All essential oils, however, will benefit from proper storage and handling.

Essential oils are volatile liquids after opening the bottle. Deterioration of essential oils can occur when exposed to heat, light, and air. To delay this process always keep your oils in dark glass bottles (blue or brown is best), in a cool dark place. Always decant larger quantities of oils into 15 ml or smaller bottles so that you can minimise the exposure to air. Essential Oils should be stored under 30 degrees which are essential unstable. Citrus oils are especially vulnerable and often will only have a shelf life of between 6 to 12 months.

Store in a dark place and in dark bottles to minimize light sensitivity, Store in glass bottles as essential oils can react with and break down plastic (and therefore contaminate themselves), Avoid extreme temperatures – essential oils are flammable, When possible, keep bottles filled up to avoid excessive air exposure.

Temperature - After you buy your essential oils, you will need to not only store the oils in an acceptable dark glass bottle, but you will also want to store the bottle in a cool, dark place that is not susceptible to humidity. Instead, find a place, such as a closet, where you can keep your oils. If you have several bottles of essential oils, consider a wooden holder or box that you can store all of your oils together in one place. Remember that high temperatures can ruin your essential oils very quickly.
