We are painting a wooden bathroom floor but the area around the toilet smells badly of urine (I guess me and my two sons are partly responsible!). We have cleaned the floor thoroughly and painted over it using an eco-friendly water-based paint but the floor stll stinks. I was wondering if an oil-based gloss would effectively mask the smell. Any ideas? Or do we have to sand it away?

I would start with soaking the floor with household bleach. That should react with the ammonia in the urine enough to make the smell tolerable. Then paint over with a pigmented varnish. Parks makes a sealer that is alcohol based and dries in minutes. Then re coat with what ever you like.
an oil-based paint won’t really help because oils still breath. this is tough. it’s hard to say just how far the urine odor has penetrated the wood. it may even be down to the subfloor! if you’re lucky, you can just sand it and refinish it. vinegar works well against some pet odor smells, but i’m not sure how well it will work in your situation. (you must alway be careful when wetting wood.) good luck!
Bicarbonate of soda - sprinkle liberally around the pedestal leave for an hour or three hoover up the excess and hopefully that will be you floor odour free without to much strain on the environment
You can’t sand it away. It’s in the fibers of the wood. All you need is an odor blocking primer. I think KILZ makes one.
If you want a wood floor, sand it, as usual, and stain. When you coat with the poly, it, too, blocks the smell.
