oil
Caerbanog Interrupted asked:

I just got a re-built engine installed in my van 6 months ago. My mechanic who is acting suspicious said that 10W 30 oil is good for winter and that he suggests using Castroil brand. Are these sound suggestions? Any other suggestions or advice? Also, if you know what kind of oil filter to buy with my oil purchase, that would be handy. Thanks for reading.

use the same oil in it year round, especially on a rebuilt engine thers no need for people to keep changing oils from winter to summer,i got a rebuilt 360 in my truck and i run the same oil all year round in it,this is its second year on the new engine and so far its been flawless,it uses no oil and i use pennzoil in it year round ,you can choose the oil of your choice, thats up to you,but its not necessary to change the weight of the oil from winter to summer especially when your using a thin oil now,10-w-30 is a real good all round oil to put in it unless you dealing with temperatures that stay well below freezing all the time then you could go to 5-w-20 in it,good luck.

The 3.0 calls for 5W-30 from the factory, but I’ve used 10W-30 in my daughter’s ‘92 LeBaron with a 3.0 for more than 30,000 miles, now showing 161,000 miles, and it hasn’t seem to hurt anything. I don’t know where you live, but very cold winter temperatures, consistently below 25-30 degrees, might necessitate a lighter grade.

A coworker uses Castrol GTX, not sure what grade, in his 3/4 ton Chevy pickup which has 170,000 miles and it uses about a quart of oil between changes he says.

I’ve always used Pennzoil motor oil and Fram oil and air filters and have no complaints about either.

If you purchased your rebuilt engine from an auto parts store Advance, AutoZone, O’Reilly’s, etc. or purchased a Jasper or Recon engine from a garage, ask them what weight oil the engine rebuilder recommends, it might be different than the factory recommendation because the engine has been rebuilt, but I doubt it.

Dodge man is right all I’d add is if you want to protect that rebuild engine use Lucas oil treatment it helps in case of ever there is over heating or the engine goes low on oil and is especially good for cold starting wear and tear.I’d change the oil and oil filter and in place of 1 litre of oil add 1 litre of Lucas oil treatment.
I’d always use the proper grade of oil year around too and never mix two different types of oils regardless if both are 5w 30 bec it’s not good to mix different brands of oil really.

Hopes that helps and best of luck.By the way many car manufactures not only recommend Lucas oil treatment products but they also sell it and uphold the engine warranty on even new vehicles that have had Lucas added.
