It’s a major fallacy, except in the hands of a very experienced artist. In that sort of class, however, the teaching and result is more craft than art, which ends up really in a “coloring in” process, rather than letting the magical advanced techniques bring the subject to life. You can get a pack of two giant 10 foot by 10 foot drop cloth canvas’ at the hardware store for only 10 bucks. Then stretch it on to a frame and get a big bucket of white gesso and put 2 coats on it.
