So there you have it. Hydrogen economy existed in the past and still exists to this day. It just isn’t used in cars anymore. Why isn’t hydrogen used? Because it’s not competitive with gasoline price wise for new and very efficient technologies while the old tech is bulky, uneconomical and leads to more CO2 emissions than current fuels. The future holds promise, especially considering the expected decline in oil extraction which would make gasoline much more expensive to produce.
The comparison stands. You need more energy to produce gasoline than you get out of burning it. The same is true for H2. Hydrogen has been used in the past for lighting, cooking and even heating. My home city used hydrogen in that way for 100 years before it was phased out by electricity and natural gas. It was produced by coal gasification. Today hydrogen is made in enormous quantities for use in oil refineries. During shortages of liquid fuels many cars were converted to hydrogen in Europe.
We could label everything “energy carrier” by your definition of gasoline. I am an energy carrier. Guinea pig ****. A noise. A hydrogen economy sounds just as crackpot as cold fusion sounds just as crackpot as harnessing every conceivable sound in the universe and using it to power our automobiles. I’m sure it’s possible, but I highly doubt it will happen.

I’m a power engineer and I can tell that there’s no way America will make up for fossil fuels with renewables. That role will be reserved to coal. As for what he sais about hydrogen I strongly disagree. Hydrogen storage is 4x more compact and 16x lighter than state of the art batteries. Don’t tell me that mid sized sedans will ever drive on batteries as hydrogen is barely sufficient a carrier. And finally, gasoline is also an energy carrier just like hydrogen…

Yeah and where do you get your info? The Sierra Club? Coal fuel is much higher in CO2, but CO2 is a “greenhouse gas” not a pollutant. US oil production has been declining since 1970 and even at its height was less than 10 million barrels per day and guess what, we don’t consume all that we produce, not we sell it abroad. If we drill in Alaska, some of that oil will go abroad and not be used for US consumption.
US demand for petroleum peaked in 1978 at 18.8million barrels per day, so I doubt we were “still burning american oil for the most part” during the 70s oil crisis.
