Corvair1966 asked:

How does old oil, assuming that there is enough oil, create anything more than a negligible affect on fuel economy?
The reason I ask is because It seems like that always gets made a red herring when trying to locate an actual tangible malfunction in the engine’s operation.

GAIL

It probably wouldn’t to any measurable degree in the real world. The wrong viscosity can eat miles a bit, as can really dirty oil.

the oil is not doing it’s job of lubricating and cleaning cyclinder walls. the dirtier it gets the less it can take away. Also the older and sludgier it gets the engines oil pump has to work harder to pump it through.

old, dirty oil makes a drag on moving parts and the engine has to work harder to make them move.

In a word, resistance.

When oil starts to break down, it looses it’s lubricating qualities, causing resisitance. That means it’ll take more gas to keep moving the same parts.

Forget about the gas mileage. What about the wear and tear on your engine? As high as gas prices are, new engines are still much higher.

@Markus I get your drift on where you were going there. I often think of my past and use it as a means to analyze where I am and where I want to get to. Where I struggel is balancing it all out. How do you guys balance things out?

I’ve been exploring on the web trying to get ideas on how to get my blog site coded, your present style and design are fantastic. Did you actually code it yourself or did you employ a programmer to do it for you?

I believe that one of your ads triggered my internet browser to resize, you might well want to put that on your blacklist.
