oil
Raymond J asked:

I have a large pile of small metal drum parts that are completely covered in what appears to be motor oil. I have removed the oil from the larger parts with Simple Green and a scrub brush but I’m definitely not looking forward to cleaning the smaller parts that way because it’ll be very labor intensive.

Does anyone have any ideas on other ways to remove the oil? Are there any household products that I can soak the parts in that will remove all or at least some of the oil? Boil them? Any products that aren’t too toxic?

Thanks.

Greased lightning is the best. It works great and not too toxic. It,s made for oil, and safe enough to wash clothes with too.

You might try Dawn - dishwashing soap….it cuts through oil and grease pretty easily.

Brake parts cleaner, it comes in a spray can at any parts store.

There is a water based solution that will completely remove the oil if you soak it for long enough. I’ve seen it for sell at Harbor Freight. The shop next door at work has a parts cleaner with it and it works great. It’s a form of oil eating germs if you can believe that. You have to keep the solution warm. The shop that has it has a special parts cleaner with a heating element in it that keeps it about 100F or so. You could probably put your pan on top of an heating pad. The box of powder sells for $15. If you get any brake cleaner in it, the germs will die and the solution will not work then.
