What kind of oil to use on a squeaky wood chair?

I just bought a beautiful gently used wood rocker but it squeaks. What is the best oil to use for a good piece of wood furniture? I have olive oil, coconut oil, peanut oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil and mineral oil already on hand. Will any of these work without doing harm to the wood? I’d prefer a natural and inexpensive solution.

You don’t oil wood furniture when it squeaks. YOu need to tighten it up so that the wood doesn’t rub against itself. Find the joint which is squeaking and find a way to put a good wood glue into the joint so that it doesn’t show. Clamp and allow to dry.

Murphy’s oil. It may take a couple of treatments but it will work. The wood is squeaking because it is dry. Dont use other oils because they can cause a break down in the finish and/or stain or laminate on your rocking chair. The Murphy’s oil will soak into the wood and help restore the proper moisture to the wood so the squeaking will eventually go away.

Hi,

I love the squeak of a wood rocker, reminds me of gram-maw.
Just enjoy it as is.

What ever you do, pleeeeeeese do not put WD40 on it!

If the joint starts coming apart then reglue and clamp it till it cures. This may last alittle while but someday it will loosen again.

If I had to guess at something to put on it to stop the squeak, I would guess something like melted wax down in the joint edges. That would stop the squeak but might cause the joint to come apart quicker.

Just name the chair “Old Squeaky” of something like that. lol

Im providing a link to a product that is made just for this type of problem. It works. (Don’t use any of the oils you mentioned, they’re likely to break down the finish)

When dealing with moving wood parts (as in a glider, windows, etc) … wax is a good choice, even if all you happen to have on hand is a crayon.

I agree with marvinator. Don’t use oil find the joint that is squeaking and reglue it even if you have to take it apart to get plenty of glue into it. You might be able to find an old hypodermic needle to ****** some glue in there.
