The price collapsed due to global unwinding of massive leverage. Oil should not have been at $145 a barrel given the phony economic boom, but it will soon be at $145 a barrel due to the massive money expansion currently going on around the world.
How much they are actually sitting on remains to be debated, but yes, it must be taken into account. We’ll still hit peak sooner or later though.
Ok, I have a question:
First of all, I believe in peak oil 100%.
However, as far as I understand, OPEC controls the supply of oil. It was my understanding that the reason that production has been flat is because they are keeping production down in order to maintain a high price. This way they are able to receive a higher price for a longer time on a dwindling resource.
This kind of contradicts the explanation that this guy has that the flat oil production is because of peak oil.

OK. I see your point. For me mine issue is our dependence on increasing GDP. Current global economic, technological and social development works well only when GDP is growing. We currently can’t increase GDP (I’m writing about global economy) without increasing energy input. It can’t be sustainable.

All the talk is of global warming, but it’s goiing to get might mighty cold when the oil and gas runs out.

But of course wind turbines produce electricity, and we mostly use petroleum to create liquid fuels. Petroleum is basically portable energy, while most alternatives (coal, nuclear, wind, solar) go to generate electricity, which is mostly for powering things that don’t move.
The only way we are likely to deal with the inevitable decline in liquid fuels is to drastically reduce personal transportation. We must learn to move bits, not bodies. Nothing else can reduce petroleum use faster.
Don’t worry, Obama appointed Dr. Steven Chu to head the Department of Energy. Dr. Chu is a very smart guy who is familiar with the problem of peak oil. Not to mention the problem of global warming.

The U.S. could build a lot of wind power with a World War II style effort. During WWII, the U.S. built 300,000+ warplanes in four years, starting from a tiny base. The War Production Board took over the economy and told Detroit not to build any automobiles for the consumer market. Everything went into war production. A similar effort could build out the Great Plains with 300,000 large wind turbines, generating the energy equivalent of our oil imports.

Frightening scenario…No escape from this…If indeed oil peaks soon then biggest casuality will be the largest consumer section…Which is transport…I expect the first sign will be fuel rationing…Only essential services will get fuel…

I have seen this very important presentation a year ago on the webpage of Chris Martenson. Most people only have an interest in acute problems. As long as fuel is halfway affordable no one seems to consider seriously that we are already at the beginning of the post peak oil era.
It would be nice to know what has changed between this video and the earlier version.
